Imperial residence

Wiener Neustadt was the imperial residence for several years and therefore ranks with cities such as Aachen and Vienna. The emperor resided in the castle.

The following emperors resided in Wiener Neustadt:

• Frederick III, emperor from 1440 – 1493
• His son, Maximilian I, born in 1459 in Wiener Neustadt, ruled from 1493 – 1519, he was buried in the George’s Cathedral.
