The castle of Wiener Neustadt
After the Styrian dynasty of princes of the Traungauer had died out, the dukedom of Styria devolved to the Babenberger. The county Pitten, which today belongs to the districts of Wiener Neustadt and Neunkirchen, also lies in this area.
In order to protect the settlements at the borders of Steinfeld, Pitten, Neunkirchen, Gloggnitz and Fischau, the Babenberger duke Leopold V founded a new city “Civitas Nova”.
So the city was fortified and the castle of Wiener Neustadt was built in the south-east.
