A castle was created

In 1192 the Babenberger duke Leopold V. decided to found a well fortified castle in the lowland of the “Steinfeld”. For this building a part of the ransom of Richard I. of England was used. Together with Hainburg – which was also financed with this ransom – Wiener Neustadt was a bulwark in the East of the country to defend it against other people.

By conferring important privileges the new city was flourishing. Even in 1200 they began with the building of the late Romanesque architecture, the parish church “Zu unserer lieben Frau”. Also in the time of the Babenberger the castle with four towers was constructed in the South-East of the city.
